What is pilates?

Pilates is a form of low impact, strength training exercise, developed in the early 20th century by a German physical trainer called Joseph Pilates. It aims to strengthen muscles while improving posture and flexibility. People of all ages and fitness levels can benefit from Pilates, whether you are using it as part of your injury rehabilitation or to increase your strength and flexibility. There is also growing evidence that Pilates is supportive during menopause through being load bearing, strengthening and promoting mobility. It differs from yoga in that there is more focus on muscle toning through core strength and controlled movement.

We offer two types of Pilates:

  • Mat Pilates – This is the most accessible type of Pilates and is great for beginners looking to learn technique using their body weight for resistance. It’s predominantly floor based exercises on a mat. We offer 1-2-1 mat pilates with an APPI instructor. APPI was developed by an Australian husband and wife physio team. The format includes modifications to improve muscle activation, especially when pain is present. This enables us to maximise it’s benefit for anyone in rehabilitation and injury recovery.
  • Reformer Pilates – Exercises in reformer pilates exercises are performed on a reformer machine. A reformer is made up of a sliding carriage or bed, attached to a frame with springs and pulleys. Together this provides a means of applying sustained resistance during exercises, as you push or pull the carriage along the frame for a full body strengthening workout. It is designed to be very easy to use and helps increase strength, flexibility, stamina and balance. It is particularly effective when we want to isolate a joint or region of the body for direct attention, in the case of post operative or injury rehabilitation. It’s also a fantastic way to grow your Pilates practice if you are currently a fan of Mat based Pilates.

We offer a 1-2-1 session on the Pilates Reformer with a specially trained instructor. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to improve your range of movement or training for elite competition, Reformer Pilates will certainly enable you to challenge your physical self.
